North Carolina Teratogen Information Service and Fetal Alcohol Prevention Program

Year: 2012

The North Carolina Teratogen Information Service (NCTIS) and Fetal Alcohol Prevention Program was created to address the problem of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and to focus its outreach education on the dangers of alcohol use during pregnancy.  The program strives to decrease North Carolina’s incidence of preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities by providing education to pregnant women, women of child-bearing age, their significant others, and the professionals who work with them, as well as to support them with referral sources about early intervention.  The Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Service, funds the program through a grant provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration(SAMHSA) and contracts with Mission Hospital’s Fullerton Genetics Center, in Asheville, NC to carry out this work.
