Public funds account for 61 percent of behavioral health treatmentexpenditures.
On August 14, SAMHSA released the National Expenditures for Mental HealthServices and Substance Abuse Treatment, 1986-2009, finding that mental health and substanceabuse treatment spending totaled $147 billion and $24 billion, respectively, in 2009. Publicfunds accounted for 69 percent of substance abuse treatment spending and 60 percent ofmental health treatment spending, compared with only 49 percent of all health care spending.In addition, the report notes that increased federal funding during and after the recentrecession partially offset the effect of state budget cuts on behavioral health funding (SAMHSA,8/14).
