Lawsuit seeks to reverse cuts to HHS pregnancy prevention program

Year: 2018

A new class-action lawsuit alleges that HHS illegally ended federal grants under the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program two years ahead of schedule. The lawsuit, filed by Healthy Futures of Texas and attorneys with Public Citizen, asks a federal court to order HHS to continue the grants awarded to roughly 60 organizations. The grants, originally created in 2009, were supposed to last for five years. HHS abruptly announced the grant funding cuts last summer. The Trump administration has also announced that it would reshape the program to have a strong focus on abstinence education. Several courts have already rejected HHS' plan to cut more than $200 million from the program. The biggest blow to the department's efforts came earlier this month, when a federal judge in Washington state sided with Planned Parenthood and issued a permanent injunction.
