New toolkit helps providers address mental health challenges of youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are disproportionately affected by mental health challenges, a disparity that is heightened by too few mental health providers who are trained to serve this population. The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development has come out with a tool kit that, while directed at health care of adults with IDD, can be used for children with IDD as well. The toolkit also includes disability-specific Health Watch Tables.
The IDD Toolkit is now available online. The toolkit offers health care providers best-practice tools and a wealth of information regarding specific medical and behavioral concerns of adults with IDD, including resources for patients and families.
The aim of this project is to equip primary care practices in the United States to care for adults with IDD as they transition from their pediatrician’s care. The website’s information is an adaptation for U.S. use of a Canadian book, “Tools for the Primary Care of People with Developmental Disabilities,” (2011) which is based on consensus guidelines and has been peer-reviewed.
