HHS commits to taking on transgender discrimination under ACA
August 08, 2012
According to a memo obtained by Chris Geidner of BuzzFeed, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) considers discrimination based on “gender identity or failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity” to be illegal under the Affordable Care Act. Advocates who feel that transgender people are often denied care were pleased about this important memo. “This announcement affirms that all patients in federally funded health care settings must be treated equally and may not be denied care simply because of who they are,” said Maya Rupert of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
This is a great example of advocacy in action. The LGBT community spoke up and HHS listened. Lessons all around.
