The Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS) is a not-for-profit agency that provides more than 20 programs for children, teenagers, and their families. By renovating a 13,000 square-foot building using green materials, SIMHS hopes to hit two birds with one stone by creating an ecologically friendly center for children’s mental health services.
SIMHS helps almost one in ten Staten Families each year and is enthusiastic about doing so while simultaneously bringing a green image to the borough. The projected end date is in 2010.
Some building techniques being used include solar roof panels, a plant-covered green, solar “walls” on the stair tower, occupancy light sensors, light-capitalizing windows, porous paving, recycled rainwater plumbing systems, and non-toxic paints. SIMHS also hopes to reduce future energy costs by making this environmental investments and statement.
