As we announced earlier this week, Senator Tom Harkin on Wednesday introduced the Keeping All Students Safe Act (KASA), vowing to push forward with this bill "either as a stand-alone piece of legislation or by incorporating it into a bigger bill." The bill puts the contentious issue back on the front burner in Congress after the House passed a similar bill in 2010 and a previous Senate bill stalled. Make no mistake; getting the KASA bill through will be an uphill battle so your continued advocacy on this issue is important.
The inappropriate use of seclusion and restraint is an issue we have been focusing on for over a year now. Here are a few items to get you up to speed:
- Read the seclusion and restraint final report handed out at the briefing.
- Read the Morning Zen post by Joe Ryan on alternatives to seclusion and restraint.
- Read the Morning Zen post by Bill Lichtenstein for a personal account of the impact of seclusion and restraint on a child and on a family.
Good for you Senator Harkin and keep on pushing!
