Magellan Health Services invites family organizations and parents of children receiving behavioral health services to attend a national roundtable discussion on February 6th. The discussion will explore how you can use the information in Magellan’s clinical monograph to inform your advocacy efforts.
The monograph, Appropriate Use of Psychotropic Drugs in Children and Adolescents, includes research to address the anxiety and confusion that can surround the prescription of these medications to children and adolescents.

- Only about 31 percent of psychotropic medications have been approved by the FDA for use in children or adolescents. It is estimated that currently more than 75% of the prescriptions written for psychiatric illness in this population are “off label” in usage.*
- Magellan believes that prescribing these medications can be appropriate, but that parents, caregivers and practitioners need to understand the risks, and monitor their use.
