Friday Update 1-24-14

Greetings faithful readers. What? Friday Update on Wednesday morning? Well, we could say we were waiting for the President's State of the Union speech... and the Republican response... so here it is. But don't read it after you finish Friday Update. Always best to be in the proper frame of mind when perusing political speeches... Speaking of proper moods, how about some compromise to get us all goin' on this hump day and then get to readin'!

Most important reads for this week

Celebrating the life of Jan Markiewicz - a great system of care advocate
The Children's Mental Health Network community of families, providers, researchers and policy-makers lost a great advocate with the passing of Jan Markiewicz. Jan's light burned bright in her tireless efforts to educate and train those who care deeply about improving the lives of youth with emotional challenges and their families. Always with a smile, Jan had a way of keeping the trials and tribulations of this work in perspective. I will always remember her positive can-do attitude and welcoming spirit. Through the sadness that comes with her passing I, like many others who had the opportunity to be touched by her grace, am blessed to have known her and benefited from her kind and gentle spirit.

Over the age of 18 and have experienced restraint and seclusion? Your voice is needed
I am working with a group of people (Action to Keep Students Safe) who are developing a campaign to support passage of the Keeping All Students Safe Act. This Act addresses the misuse of restraint and seclusion in our country's schools. We urgently need to find 4-5 young adults who experienced restraint and seclusion while they were in school. They must be ages 18+ so they can speak of their own accord about their experience, although a family member may be present with them. This is a time sensitive request as we need to hear from them as soon as possible. If you know of a young adult who would be willing to discuss their experience with restraint and seclusion while in school please contact me or have the individual contact me for more information at scott@cmhnetwork.org

State-by-state summary of Health Insurance Exchange options now available
The National Reach Coalition has been working on an extensive project to make useful information about the ACA available to the general public. Check out their state-by-state summary of information about Health Insurance Exchanges and Medicaid Expansion to make it easier for consumers to understand what is available in their locations. Props to CMHNetwork Advisory Council member Daniel Dawes for his instrumental contribution to this effort.
