If you were creating the agenda what would you want on it?

At the recent Advisory Meeting the SAMHSA Administrator indicated that maybe there should be a special focus on children and youth for the next Advisory meeting. We need to do everything in our power to help what is now a thought become a solid agenda priority focus for the next SAMHSA Advisory meeting.

So what do you think? If you were setting the agenda for the next SAMHSA National Advisory Committee what would you want included on the agenda?

I would love to talk about supporting families with peer to peer parents/guardians through parent support and educational programs as well as Youth leadership programs including, empowering peer to peer interaction, family involvement with wonderful outcomes. With the budget crisis more and more families are cut out of services and suffering. Lets do something about this with a focus on children and families.

Focusing on children and young adults should be a priority. In the long run taking good care of our kids will save money. Family involvement is key.

To my surprise after the double digit years of SAMHSA supporting systems of care. The investment in building and collecting extremely compelling data about family involvement and family-run organizations from across the country. There has been no solid financial commitment made by insurence companies, state and federal Medicaid to secure funding to family-run organizations. Family peer support works, it inhances the effectiveness of clinical services, while filling the practical gaps for families. Please discuss funding to peer organizations directly at the level you funded systems of care. It is imperative that peer organizations are strengthened and made healthier, our children are all the reason.
